How to do a Brand Audit (and free checklist)ย

Brands are living, breathing things. They grow, they evolve, and if weโ€™re honest, they can sometimes lose their way. Maybe the design feels a little dated. Maybe the tone no longer matches where your business is headed. Or maybe your brand presence just isnโ€™t leaving the impact on the audience that you thought it would.ย

Look, your brand isnโ€™t just a logo or tagline. In fact, it’s your reputation, your vibe, and how people feel when they see your name. A living, breathing identity… and just like any living thing, it needs regular checkups. Thatโ€™s where a brand audit comes in.

First, Why Bother with a Brand Audit?

Think of a brand audit like hitting pause to answer: โ€œIs everything still reflecting who we really are?โ€ Did the internal teams get our messaging? Is the market seeing us the way we see ourselves? Itโ€™s about:

  • Spotting hiccups or mixed signals (nobody likes those)
  • Pinpointing whatโ€™s awesome and what needs a refresh
  • Tracking how you stack up against your competitors
  • Upping your brand performance and cohesion
  • Shaping a smarter brand strategy

In short? Every brand audit is your opportunity to stand above the competition, and in some cases stand with them.

How to Do a Brand Audit: The 8-Step Checklist

Hereโ€™s your step-by-step guide. Consider this your brandโ€™s wellness routine, simple, smart, and scalable tailored spa treatment for the baby you’re nurturing.

1. Know Why Youโ€™re Auditing

You need to know if you are curious about how your team connects with the brand, or how the market judges you… or both. This is important because it helps to clarify your goals. Once that’s done you can now decided on who to bring into the conversation. This would be your ideal dream team:

  • Leadership (CEO, CMO): These are the storytellers. Strategic and Direct.
  • Brand manager: They are the ones on the frontline with metrics and campaigns at their fingertips. They know what button to push to achieve results.
  • Marketers: Who else knows campaigns, results, and competitors like the back of their hand. You need them.
  • Sales (and more sales): Sure, everyone here contributes to growth, but these folks are on the front lines every day. They enforce the brand everyday every time and know what customers really think about your brand.

2. Scan the Competitive Landscape

List out your competitors. Both direct and indirect. Compare notes on messaging, pricing, quality… Everything that sets you (or them) apart. You should run a quick SWOT analysis:

  • Strengths: What do you do as good or better than anyone?
  • Weaknesses: What could you tighten up?
  • Opportunities: Whereโ€™s the untapped potential?
  • Threats: What could knock you off your game?

This paints a clearer picture of your positioning.

3. Gather the Goods: Data & Insights and nothing else.

Now, collect the raw material. Everything must be facts based:

  • Customer feedback: What are people raving about? What bugs them?
  • Employee input: Different departments or team members describing your brand. Do they narrate the same story?
  • Brand collateral: Check visuals and messages across departments and platforms. Are they aligned?
  • Asset usage stats: Ideally via a DAM (Digital Asset Management) system, see which teams use what and how often. If you cannot afford one, then use structured folders and carry out internal surveys.

Focus on getting everything in. Don’t analyze yet, and donโ€™t discredit anything! If it’s data it’s valuable, if it’s your feelings, leave it out the door.

4. Check Brand Consistency

You’ve gathered your brand assets, now take those assets and evaluate them.

What you’re checking for:

  • Does the logo look and feel consistent across touchpoints?
  • Are colors and fonts used correctly?
  • Does your tone of voice align, whether it’s a newsletter, website, or internal doc?
  • How about the brand sonics? Do they hit the right marks? Every time?

This will reveal how aligned or misaligned your brand truly is internally. If your brand fails here then this a level 0 priority. It must be fixed as soon as possible.

5. Measure Visibility

How visible is your brand? Track:

  • Brand awareness (recognized vs unprompted mentions)
  • Share of search (you vs competitors in online searches)
  • Share of voice (mentions online and offline relative to rivals)
  • Social and media mentions

Are people noticing you more or less over time?

6. Gauge Brand Reputation

Reputation isnโ€™t what you say about yourselfโ€”itโ€™s what others say about you.

  • Brand preference: would a customer choose you over a competitor?
  • Brand loyalty: are they coming back for more?
  • Online sentiment: positive, negative, or neutral comments?
  • Reviews on platforms like G2, Capterra? Plus direct customer service feedback

This gives insight into how you’re actually perceived in the wild.

7. Share Your Findings

Now you have data, turn it into insight. Create 2 versions:

  • High-level version for executives: Key takeaways, quick wins, broad direction.
  • Deep-dive version for your teams: Detailed data, insights, quotes, and charts.

Group your findings under consistency, visibility, and reputation. Make sure to tie together with visual data. The recipients should fully understand the document.

8. Create Your Action Plan. Time to make a move!

You should NEVER let great insights go stale. Call the team together and create action plans based on your brand audit:

  • Fix consistency issues. Either through clearer guidelines, more training, better tools, whatever is necessary.
  • Boost your brand’s visibility. Anywhere competitors are winning start targeted campaigns, open new channels. If you have to do a giveaway then do it!
  • Build reputation! Highlight positives, Take the medicine for weak spots, Talk about successes.

As soon as that’s done, you must Prioritize workstreams. Your brand isn’t going to wait and the competition wouldn’t either. Assign owners. Set timelines. Turn the insights into real change actions.
